Five Tips to Optimizing Mental Functioning

Have you ever had that sinking feeling when you’re with a high value client or prospect or center of influence, and the right word does not come to you? We all have days where our mental focus is not what it should be. In fact, it is said that 10% of our moments in a normal work day drive 90% of the results. Given the odds are stacked against us, it is fundamentally critical we hit those moments of impact with full engagement, passion, and creativity.
There is an even higher cognitive energy crisis within the busiest industries, including financial services, where advisors often report higher levels of stress and pressure, and the need to multitask is inevitable.
According to researchers at the Human Performance Institute, doing two things at once not only guarantees diminished efficacy in both tasks – it also steals from mental energy reserves. We think we are taking shortcuts, but there are no shortcuts.
But there’s hope, with the right habits. The bad news is that time flies – the good news is that you’re the pilot. Consider these rituals in your life to catalyze optimal mental functioning:
- Never sit for longer than a 90-minute stint
- Eat high nutrient density foods – a study of 2,000 Manhattan residents showed those eating a Mediterranean diet had a 68% less chance of developing Alzheimer’s
- Journal every evening, with emphasis on your ultimate mission, or why you do what you do
- Get at least 7.5 hours of sleep every single night
- Have dinner with family or dear friends once a week. Meaningful social engagement restores brain health
